- The Workshops provide three-month long non-residential studio space for artists.
- Studios are simple, unfurnished duplex spaces. Artists are responsible for bringing in any and all necessary equipment and materials for their use while in residence.
- Residency periods are as follows: (subject to adjustment)
Session 1: June 6 – August 29, 2009
Session 2: Sept. 5 – Dec. 6, 2009
Session 3: Dec. 12, 2009 – Mar. 13, 2010
Session 4: Mar. 20 - June 19, 2010 - In exchange for free studio space, artists will teach one art class per week as part of the art classes offered at The Studio @ Billings Forge, specifically directed at the youth of the Billings Forge community.
- Artist’s artwork will be on exhibit in the Firebox Restaurant during the three-month long residency.
Artists are also encouraged to have works for sale and on exhibit in their studios. Billings Forge Community Works will receive a 25% donation (commission) on the sale of all artwork sold via exhibitions at the Firebox Restaurant and through the artist’s studios. - Each artist will donate one artwork to Billings Forge Community Works at the end of their residency that will be used towards future fundraising events to benefit The Workshops program. The selection of artwork will be decided upon between the Program Coordinator and the artist.
- Artists will maintain open studio hours on a weekly basis to encourage discourse with the public and as a means of profiling The Workshops program. A weekly, collective, Open Studio format will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 – 9:00 pm in conjunction with jazz programming at Firebox Restaurant held every Wednesday evening.
- The Workshops endeavors to develop a mentoring program with local schools in an effort to provide a one-on-one mentoring experience for Hartford youth.
- Related programming/events including, artist’s talks and panel discussions will be presented at The Studio @ Billings Forge in conjunction with the artist’s residency program.
- Weekly meetings with all artists in each residency session will be scheduled to encourage an open dialogue among all participants, to monitor progress, provide updates, and to respond to feedback.
MATERIALS FOR SUBMISSION
In order to be considered for the artist residency program, please provide the following:
- current resume
- artist’s statement
- description of why you are interested in participating in The Workshops program
- selection of 10-20 images in CD / digital format
Upon review of all materials, an appointment will be scheduled for a follow-up interview.
